Virtually Birding the Tillamook County Water Trail - A National Recreation Trail

The Tillamook County Water Trail encompasses all five estuaries and their watersheds within Tillamook County providing over 250 miles of
paddling opportunity. Imagine the birds you'd see! Designated a National Recreation Trail in 2012 this is your opportunity to sit back and
enjoy this natural resource from the comfort of your own, dry, seat. Join the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership and see the birds of the
waterways of Tillamook County from the perspective of being on the water in a non-motorized craft. Beginners welcome!!!

This slide show presentation will be held at Kiawanda Community Center on Saturday, April 13, from 9:15am to 9:45am.

2013 Featured Speakers have been announced:

Paul Baicich will present "Birds In Our Culture"

Paul has been an active birder since his early teens in New York City. A former employee of the American Birding Association,
he edited 14 of their "ABA Birdfinding Guides," edited Birding, ABA's bi-monthly magazine, and served as ABA's Director of
Conservation and Public Policy. Paul has co-led a number of birding tours and workshops to Alaska including the Aleutians, the
Pribilofs, the Seward Peninsula, and St. Lawrence Island. Among his many other activities, he has worked for the National
wildlife Refuge System on a consultant basis on issues of popular birding and parallel refuge receptiveness. In addition, Paul
co-edits the popular monthly Birding Community E-bulletin. Visit Paul Baicich's website.

Noah Strycker will present "Among Penguins"
Noah has been to the end of the world and back. He went to Antarctica in 2008 for three months to study a quarter million
Adelie Penguins. His work there was part of a long-term penguin research project funded by the National Science Foundation.
Noah grew up in rural Oregon near Cresswell, where he caught the birding bug in the 5th grade. He became something of a
birding prodigy, being recognized by the American Birding Association with their "Young Birder of the Year" award. Four years
ago, he graduated magna cum laude from Oregon State University. Noah has published numerous articles and photographs about
birds in all major birding magazines, has contributed to journals and books, and is the associate editor of "Birding" magazine.
Visit Noah Strycker's website.

Sharon Beals will present "Stick and Twigs, Spiderwebs and Moss: Bird's Nests as Messengers"
A self-proclaimed 'urban naturalist', Sharon Beals was raised in Seattle and now calls San Francisco her home. An ardent environmentalist,
Sharon uses photography as both an art form and a way to chronicle what moves her heart and concerns her conscience from habitat
restoration and plastic in the ocean, to the ecology of rivers, and of course, birds' nests. Her photographs have appeared in Audubon
Magazine and Scientific American, and American Photo named Sharon's book "Nests: Fifty Nests and the Birds that Built Them" one of
the best nature books in 2011. Visit Sharon Beals' website.

Falconry Demonstration
Michelle Burke of the Oregon Falconers Association will showecase the difference between native falcon and hawk species,
and how there are Old World counterparts to New World raptor species. She will also discuss how the falconry community
has been instrumental in bringing back the wild peregrine population, how individuals can help keep raptor populations healthy
by reducing hazards, and of course discuss the very unique relationship between falconer and raptor that defines the art and
sport of falconry. She may also touch upon how raptors have gone from vilified pests to valuable assets to natural pest control.
